IKIDZ presenter Adrian Boyd will be paying tribute to childrens' radio pioneer Ed 'Stewpot 'Stewart over the next two Saturdays, who sadly passed away on 9th January 2016.
Stewpot presented Junior Choice from 1968-1979 on a Sunday morning, broadcast simultaneously on Radios 1 and 2. Adrian never missed an episode from about 1974 to 1979 and obviously ranks Ed as his favourite radio presenter by far. 'I tried very hard to get Ed to record an IKIDZ jingle for us but never succeeded'.
IKIDZ has always included a 'Junior Choice' slot in the second hour of the show playing all the favourites that were constantly requested on the national show (in the days when radio for children was popular and deemed 'worthy and relevant').
According to the BBC and many local radio stations Adrian has contacted recently, the idea of a childrens' radio show is now though of as virtually 'preposterous' but he claimed 'the success of ikidz and the look on kids' faces when asked for their favourite song would tend to suggest otherwise. I think kids still love radio'.
Ed Stewart was superb on Junior Choice and will always be remembered for his 'Ello Darlin' jingle and the wonderful intro music of Morningtown Ride peformed by Stan Butcher and his Birds and Brass.
Adrian was thrilled to receive the LP below for Christmas in 1977 and still has it to this day.
Listen out for the Junior Choice Tribute 11am Saturday, 16th Jan and 23rd Jan.
